Overview
The Limes Germanicus was a line of frontier fortifications that bounded the ancient Roman provinces of Germania Inferior, Germania Superior, and Raetia, separating the Roman Empire from the unsubdued Germanic tribes from 83 to 260 AD. This complex system of earth banks, ditches, wooden palisades, and watchtowers was built to protect the empire from external threats. The path of the limes changed over time, stretching from the North Sea outlet of the Rhine to near Regensburg on the Danube, with the two major rivers providing natural protection from mass incursions.
